In New Jersey, adults aged 21 and older are legally allowed to purchase cannabis, but there are restrictions. They can possess up to one ounce (28 grams) of cannabis in usable form, whether solid, liquid, or concentrated. Possessing more than six ounces of marijuana for recreational use is a criminal offense, which may result in up to 18 months in prison, a fine of up to $25,000, or both. Medical marijuana patients are permitted to have up to three ounces (85 grams) within a 30-day period, except for those in hospice care or with a terminal illness, who have no set limit. Exceeding the allowed amount can lead to possession charges.
